The craft students are putting finishing touches on their masks. Each student designed and created a mask after learning about masks and their functions in other cultures. The masks were made from papier-mache and paint. They look great!

Abstract Art

The students have been learning about abstract art, as well as creating their own abstract paintings. They are using lines, colors, and shapes to express themselves.  Their paintings are beautiful and as unique as they are.

Monsters

The students have been busy putting the final touches on their monsters they designed and created from papier-mache and plaster. we are finishing up a unit on sculpture and will be beginning a new unit next week. The monsters look awesome and I can’t wait for you to see them!

What is going on in Art Class

The art students are currently going through a unit on color. We are learning about the properties of color and how to use color effectively. The students are applying their knowledge of color while creating a “color creature” (100 points= I grade on effort). I can’t wait to see how they turn out.

P.S. I rarely give homework so most posts will contain information about what your student is doing in art.

Introduction to Art Grades 6 – 8 (Full Year)

This class will give middle school students an introduction to the fundamentals of visual arts. Art students will learn about the basic elements and principles of art through hands -on experiences. In addition, with each project the students will be exposed to art from the past and present, as well as art from other cultures. Students will apply newly acquired skills to create their own two-dimensional and three-dimensional pieces of art. This yearlong course will lay the foundation for the middle school student to begin to understand art, the world around them, and themselves through various forms of creative expression. Prerequisite: None

Advanced Art Grades 9 – 12 (Full Year)

This class is designed for students that have demonstrated an understanding and competence of technique in the areas of drawing and painting. This yearlong class builds on the fundamentals of art by providing opportunities to develop and expand observation, imagination and expression. Current and past trends in art will be covered as they relate to various projects.  Prerequisite: teacher recommendation

Crafts Grades 7 – 12 (One semester)

This elective class provides students with the opportunity to develop a basic understanding of three-dimensional art through hands-on experiences. This semester long course is an introduction to the arts that utilize various different materials and tools in order to create works of art. Students will learn about various crafts from a historical perspective and through a variety of cultures while creating their own artwork. Projects will include the making of books, piñatas, masks, jewelry and different types of sculptures. Prerequisite:  None

Exploratory Art Grades 9 – 12 (Full Year)

This elective is designed to give high school students, independent of their artistic abilities and inclinations, a meaningful introduction to the breadth and depth of visual arts. Students will learn about the fundamentals of art and acquire knowledge of art from other cultures and their history. In this class the students will explore and create both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art forms. This yearlong course can help improve fine motor, problem solving, and critical thinking skills through hands-on experiences. In addition, the students will learn to communicate expressively through the creation of art. Prerequisite: None

Music Program Development

As New Vista School develops its programs, music is part of its future.  We are currently looking into bringing in Orff methodology in order to expose our students to a free-lance form of music exposure.  Through Orff methods and instruments, students will have the opportunity to explore and develop their music interests.
