Welcome back to the reading lab! The reading lab has undergone some exciting changes, including moving to a larger classroom and the addition of more computers.

If you weren’t able to make it to open house, I will send home a welcome packet. It will include a welcome letter, supply list, as well as parent and student surveys to be completed and turned in. Please look it over and email me if you have any questions or concerns. Students who have not already checked out their books will be doing so on the first day of class.

Introduction to Art Grades 6 – 8 (Full Year)

This class will give middle school students an introduction to the fundamentals of visual arts. Art students will learn about the basic elements and principles of art through hands -on experiences. In addition, with each project the students will be exposed to art from the past and present, as well as art from other cultures. Students will apply newly acquired skills to create their own two-dimensional and three-dimensional pieces of art. This yearlong course will lay the foundation for the middle school student to begin to understand art, the world around them, and themselves through various forms of creative expression. Prerequisite: None

Supply List for Digital Arts Class

Students enrolled in the Digital Arts class will need the following supplies for class:
1. Digital Camera with USB cord (or the cord that connects from the camera in to the computer)
2. Flash drive memory stick (at least 2gb) : May be purchased at any office supply store
3. Notebook with lined paper

Digital Arts Grades 8 – 12 (One semester)

This semester long class is designed to give students an introduction to the digital arts. Students will learn to take their ideas and bring them into fruition using the computer. This class will teach students the basic use of Adobe Photoshop. Students will learn how to use tools and learn fundamentals of design, while creating images from scratch and manipulating existing images. (May be repeated based on availability.)

Prerequisite: Demonstration of basic computer skills, camera skills, and/or teacher recommendation.

Advanced Art Grades 9 – 12 (Full Year)

This class is designed for students that have demonstrated an understanding and competence of technique in the areas of drawing and painting. This yearlong class builds on the fundamentals of art by providing opportunities to develop and expand observation, imagination and expression. Current and past trends in art will be covered as they relate to various projects.  Prerequisite: teacher recommendation

Crafts Grades 7 – 12 (One semester)

This elective class provides students with the opportunity to develop a basic understanding of three-dimensional art through hands-on experiences. This semester long course is an introduction to the arts that utilize various different materials and tools in order to create works of art. Students will learn about various crafts from a historical perspective and through a variety of cultures while creating their own artwork. Projects will include the making of books, piñatas, masks, jewelry and different types of sculptures. Prerequisite:  None

Exploratory Art Grades 9 – 12 (Full Year)

This elective is designed to give high school students, independent of their artistic abilities and inclinations, a meaningful introduction to the breadth and depth of visual arts. Students will learn about the fundamentals of art and acquire knowledge of art from other cultures and their history. In this class the students will explore and create both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art forms. This yearlong course can help improve fine motor, problem solving, and critical thinking skills through hands-on experiences. In addition, the students will learn to communicate expressively through the creation of art. Prerequisite: None

Girls’ Club Grades 6 – 12 (On-going enrollment)

This extracurricular club meets one day a week after-school. It is for girls only. Its purpose is to create friendships and unity among the girls of New Vista School. This club will be a place for girls to talk about typical and appropriate teenage topics, to encourage and share with one another, and to simply be girls. The girls club will have guest speakers, involvement with typical teenage peers, and other girl related activities.
